If you live in Sydney, the good news is you don’t have to go far to get the off road experience you crave. We’ve collected five of the best trails and off road tracks so you can get ready for the 4x4 adventure ahead. Wherever you go, make sure you pack your 4WD properly and take all the road trip essentials you need so you’re prepared for any incident on the road ahead.

1. Watagans National Park

Watagans National Park is a stunning national park a 1.5 hour drive north of Sydney. The park features a number of 4WD tracks for all levels that wind and weave through gorgeous rainforest scenery. Start the day with a gentle drive down the easy Watagan Forest Road to get your bearings, and then choose a 4x4 off road track to suit you. Greens Break Road offers a medium difficulty 10km track with an adventurous twist, as you navigate around small bog holes and even cross the path of an ancient tree. For a challenging technical climb you can also check out CPT 80 Road or Daniels Point Road – but be sure to come prepared as these are tough tracks.

2. Discovery Trail Kurrajong

Drive just over an hour from Sydney and you will find the unique 81 km Discovery Trail waiting for you. This scenic bushland circuit features a mix of sealed and unsealed roads and winding 4WD off road tracks. While it takes just 2 hours to complete, it’s well worth your time to stop at the numerous lookouts and admire the view over the Hawksbury and Mountain Lagoon. The 4WD track is an easy grade, but we recommend taking the time to check the route before you depart so you don’t take a wrong turn.

3. Stockton Beach

Driving your 4WD along an endless stretch of sand is truly the stuff dreams are made of, and Stockton Beach 4x4 track offers just that. This 53 km track is located a 2 hour drive north of Sydney and is a medium grade trail with one-of-a-kind views. Wind your way past enormous dunes, sand covered trees and of course the shoreline itself. On your journey you’ll even encounter WWII relics like tank traps and barb-wire pickets. Make sure you plan your trip for low-tide or you may find yourself having to turn back.

4. Abercrombie River National Park

For those with the time to go further afield, Abercrombie River National Park offers numerous trails with rock, mud and river crossings and the beauty of the Australian bush. Four hours drive from Sydney, visitors can choose from a range of tracks that extend as long as 500km. Wildlife abounds with emus, wallabies, kangaroos, and ringtail possums all found in the area.

5. Monkey Gum Fire Trail (Yalwal)

If you’re an experienced 4WD off road driver looking for a challenge, the Monkey Gum Fire Trail could be your next 4x4 adventure. A 3 hour drive from Sydney, this 4WD track is just 30km long - but don’t let the length fool you, as this trail has no shortage of challenges.
